Truth, Healing & Reclaiming your identity, are goals I want you to achieve. The stories we tell ourselves influence how we: perform in relationships; view ourselves, & make sense of our experiences of the world around us. I use a narrative approach, which is effective in helping process topics such as: trauma, anxiety, mood disorders, addiction, depression, & family of origin challenges, amongst others. My experience has provided me an in-depth understanding of how social justice issues like: racism, gender discrimination sexual orientation, ability & such impact us. I want to carefully consider the impacts of each with you. I have been working as a social worker since 2008 having helped my clients through a variety of challenges. In my work, I assist in your growth by retelling the story of your experiences so that the stories can help you discover your truth, & heal from past wounds so that you can positively move forward in your life. Trust, Honesty and Respect or “THR”, as I like to call it, are 3 crucial fundamentals that should be part of any therapeutic relationship. I work from an open & non-judgemental mindset, respecting the experiences of each individual. This allows space for you to feel truly heard & understood. I am looking forward to working with you!

I am an avid reader and film enthusiast, and overall appreciator of all stories found everywhere. If there are aspects of your story that you are dissatisfied with or are interested in learning how to process events and unpack experiences to name a few, then therapy might be a worthwhile avenue to explore. My goal as a psychotherapist is to be an active support and help empower you to address your present concerns. I am passionate about working with individuals of various identities including those from multicultural populations, immigrants, and refugees, as well as individuals belonging to the Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour (BIPOC) communities. Being vulnerable and opening up is challenging yet necessary for therapeutic change. I hope that in using a culturally-informed and client-centred therapeutic approach we can foster an environment of collaboration and trust, and together build a space where multiple stories can exist.

As a Black queer social worker of Afro-Caribbean descent, I work using a strengths-based, and trauma-informed lens, with a deep commitment to anti-racist and anti-oppressive practice. Much of my experience has been working with BIPOC and 2SLGBTQIA+ folks, particularly navigating racial, institutional and relational trauma. But I have also worked with many other communities. I believe that everyone has the ability to heal themselves, and I am passionate about supporting that journey. I mostly rely on emotion-focused, compassionate, somatic and mindfulness-based approaches. I am firmly rooted in abolitionist and liberation-based frameworks, and work from a place of deep love for my communities. I know that seeking support for our mental health is very vulnerable and can feel scary. So, I try my best to create both a safe and brave space where you can be yourself.

I’m a Black trained creative arts therapist and somatic therapy practitioner based in Tiohtia:ke/Montreal. My approach to therapy is essentially somatic, trauma-informed, person-centered and anchored in the assumptions of liberation psychology, anti-oppression & response-based practice. I have practiced drama therapy and mental health counselling in community settings, with a focus on supporting marginalized Black folks, BIPOC and QTBIPOC youth. I am committed to a decolonized or re-indigenized view of health. Instead of viewing behavior and symptoms through the lens of pathology, I ask: How has your nervous system been responding to the world around it, and why? How can we work together to build compassionate understanding for these responses, while remaining curious as to what new responses may better suit who you currently are and what you desire? Together, we can work towards your goals and support you in remembering and reconnecting to your own inherent resiliency and sacred resources for navigating all of life’s challenges. Depending on the needs of those I work with, I draw tools from different therapeutic approaches: Drama therapy, with some tools drawn from art, music and dance movement therapy Mindfulness-based techniques Person-centered therapy (humanistic) Emotion-focused therapy Solution-focused therapy Somatic and EMDR therapy Compassion-focused therapy Strength-based approach Response-based practice Internal family systems therapy (IFS) Cognitive Behavioural Therapy You can email me to schedule a 20-minute initial meeting and consultation by emailing me at: [email protected] Link to book with me: https://jade.psylio.com/en/ca/organizations/kathleen-charles-counselor/
