Ranitidine tablet 150 mg is commonly used to treat conditions related to excessive stomach acid production, such as heartburn, acid indigestion, and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). It belongs to a class of medications known as H2 blockers, which work by reducing the amount of acid produced in the stomach. Ranitidine is also used to prevent ulcers in the stomach and intestines and to treat certain types of ulcers caused by nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
Peptic Ulcer Disease: Ranitidine is effective in healing and preventing peptic ulcers, which are open sores that develop on the lining of the stomach or the upper part of the small intestine. These ulcers can be caused by excessive stomach acid or infection with Helicobacter pylori bacteria.
Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome: Ranitidine may be used to manage Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, a rare condition characterized by the overproduction of stomach acid and the formation of multiple peptic ulcers in the stomach and small intestine.
Stress Ulcer Prophylaxis: Ranitidine is sometimes used in critically ill patients to prevent stress ulcers, which can develop as a result of severe illness, trauma, or major surgery. By reducing stomach acid production, ranitidine helps protect the stomach lining from damage.
