Ranitidine 150 mg was a widely used medication primarily prescribed to reduce stomach acid production. It belonged to a class of drugs called H2 receptor antagonists and was commonly used to treat conditions like gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), peptic ulcers, and acid indigestion. By blocking histamine receptors in the stomach, ranitidine helped decrease acid levels, providing relief from heartburn and promoting ulcer healing.
Doctors also prescribed ranitidine for conditions like Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, where excessive stomach acid production leads to severe ulcers. It was available in both prescription and over-the-counter forms. However, in 2020, it was withdrawn from the market in many countries due to concerns about NDMA contamination, a potential cancer-causing substance. Patients who previously took ranitidine were advised to consult their doctors for alternative treatments like famotidine or proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) to manage acid-related conditions safely.
