Financial support ensures that BMHC is positioned to sustain and finance our network of mental health care providers. BMHC relies on donations, speaking engagements, and the provision of mental health-related training to support organizational initiatives. The work of BMHC has been sustained through the consistent and recurrent generous funding we have received since our inception. We are excited to see the prospect of increased accessibility to mental health support for Black Canadians and thank-you in advance for your generous support.

Black Employee Assistance Program (Black EAP)
An Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is a confidential counseling and support service provided to employees and their dependents.
Provider diversity: EAPs can be made more inclusive by using a diverse range of providers, such as therapists and counselors from different cultural backgrounds, to ensure that employees are able to connect with someone who understands their culture and experiences.
Reasons why a Black EAP is necessary:
- Addressing the specific needs of diverse Black communities: A Black EAP can help address the specific mental health needs of Black employees.
- Promoting equity: A Black EAP can promote equity and address disparities in access to mental health care for Black employees.
- Improve their overall well-being: A Black EAP can improve the overall well-being and quality of life for Black employees.
Self Care Through Hair Program
Many barbers and hairstylists are strategically positioned to build relationships and trust with their clients, making them possible “First Responders” to identify clients in need. The “Self Care Though Hair” program will take this a step further by teaching barbers/hairstylists how to:
- Engage in active listening and guide their clients to talk about issues in their life.
- Recognize trauma and distressing patterns in clients.
- Provide clients with positive reinforcement for whatever they are facing by undergoing stigma reduction and validation training.
- Partner with community service providers who can support these clients in a professional role by offering psychological support.
- Barbers can offer support and guidance, but they cannot diagnose or treat mental health conditions; for this reason, it is imperative to assign a professional mental health to every barber/beauty shop, that participates in this program.
