Black Mental Health First Response Half-Day Training

Seeking guidance for working effectively with Black Canadians? Want the best practices when offering mental health support? Register today.

Black Mental Health First Response (BMHFR) is a specialized training program designed to equip individuals with the necessary knowledge and skills to provide culturally sensitive initial support to members of the Black community facing mental health challenges or crises. BMHFR aims to bridge the gap between the mental health needs of Black individuals and the available resources by offering immediate assistance until appropriate professional help or culturally tailored resources can be accessed.

What makes us Different? BMHFR distinguishes itself by integrating Africentric principles and understanding into its curriculum. This approach acknowledges and addresses the distinct cultural influences and perspectives within the Black community.
Key components of the program include:

  • Approaching the Person: Participants will learn how to effectively communicate with individuals experiencing mental health challenges, while being sensitive to their cultural context and potential resistance.
  • Assessing Crisis: Training will focus on distinguishing between crisis and non-crisis situations and following appropriate protocols to assess risk.
  • Reducing Stigma: BMHFR emphasizes strategies to reduce stigma surrounding mental health within the Black community and promote open discussions, thus normalizing mental health matters.
  • Care and Well-being: The program highlights the importance of culturally sensitive self-care practices and maintaining mental well-being within the context of the Black community.

Target Audience: BMHFR offers courses suitable for various audiences including workplaces, workshops, retail settings, institutions, and other environments seeking to enhance their understanding of Black Mental Health. Participants do not become qualified to diagnose or treat mental health conditions but gain essential knowledge and culturally competent skills to offer initial support and guide individuals towards appropriate professional help within the context of Black mental health.
