Tricia is also very passionate about working with families. As she believes the family is a small unit that reflects the broader community, city, country and even the world. Therefore, by making a small change or impact on one family unit, there is potential for more significant transformation globally.

We might be a good therapeutic fit if you are at the onset of considering a life event in a new light; if you’re trying to navigate systems of oppression with grace for yourself; if you’re looking for support in finding a sweet spot between codependence and individualism in your relationships; or if you’re just looking to be kept company in the hard parts of being a person. I am an abolitionist and I use systemic, person-centred/humanistic, somatic, solutions-focused, queer, and feminist therapies. I completed a 400-hour practicum at the Sexual Assault Centre of Edmonton as part of my graduate program at Athabasca University and am also an advanced level student of Somatic Experiencing. You can expect me to ask you “how” questions and be willing to crack the odd joke with you about your tried, tested, and true coping strategies. It takes a great deal of chutzpah to begin a therapeutic journey and I wish you all the best in yours whether it involves me or not!

LGBTQ+ Friendly & Transgender Safe Space Life can be hard sometimes, but we don’t have to do it all alone. Opening yourself up to someone you do not know is hard, but I strive to make that part as comfortable as possible. I work from an integrative (e.g., psycho-dynamic, emotion-focused, cognitive-behavioural) perspective that is trauma-informed. I always cater therapy to whomever I am working with in order ensure that we are working towards the goals you would like to achieve. The therapeutic relationship is important to me. I strive to create an environment that is warm, open, and non-judgmental. I am open and accepting to any and all of your identities, whether that be religion, race, sexuality, beliefs or even if you have a lifestyle that is different. Individual (Adults and Adolescents) During our first session, I will orient you to what therapy is and how we should be progressing through it. I will also be sharing a bit about myself and how I work. During our first session, you will have a chance to discuss the concerns that have brought you to therapy. We will also get a chance to map out your goals and come up with a plan as to how we will address them within our sessions. A psycho-dynamic perspective will help me understand your past and how it’s influenced your current state, an emotion-focused perspective will help us understand your emotions and how they play a role in your distress and how to alleviate them if they ever feel overwhelming. Lastly, the cognitive-behavioural perspective will help us hone in on maladaptive behaviours and work towards undoing them with a systematic plan. I understand that no two people are the same, so I do my best to be open to learning about a person’s context (religion, culture, race, gender, sexuality, etc.). I believe that these are important aspects of who you are and should be taken into consideration to make therapy more meaningful. Couples The ones who say that relationships are easy are probably the ones who aren’t in relationships. In my work with couples, I strive to equally take both (or more) partners into consideration as we work towards creating a healthier relationship. The journey is ongoing, but it’s worthwhile. Together, we will be tackling communication issues, misunderstandings, triggers, hostility, and more. Sometimes you feel like you’re stuck in an endless cycle with your loved one. But taking the step to address your concerns can alleviate tensions. I will be implementing tools and interventions that pertain to strengthening partnership whilst incorporating what I’ve learnt throughout my education. I have an M.A. in Counselling Psychology from the University of Ottawa. I have experience working with marginalized populations (e.g., Planned Parenthood Ottawa, Family Services Ottawa), in addition to working in private practice. I have worked with a variety of presenting concerns throughout my career (e.g., anxiety, depression, trauma, addiction, interpersonal conflict, burnout, sex addiction, self-harm, panic disorder, etc.).

7 years of mental health experience

I acknowledge that I am an uninvited visitor gratefully living, working, and playing on the traditional and unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səl̓ílwətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. Who I Am As a 2SIQ (2Spirit, Indigiqueer) tastawiyiniwak, transgender, queer, neuroexpansive (audhd, c-ptsd+), and disabled counsellor with mixed swampy cree (from fisher river cree nation), japanese, and Black/african diaspora & scottish (through jamaica) heritage, I bring a rich and intersectional perspective to my practice. My life experiences shape my work and enable me to connect with individuals across a broad range of backgrounds across the lifespan. My work is rooted in culturally informed and holistic practices, creating a warm, safe(r), and inclusive space for healing and growth. My Approach My approach is deeply rooted in spiritual wisdom and reciprocal relationships. My spiritual wisdom arises from my connection to spirit and ancestors, the land, and my inner knowing. I am guided by land-based, liberation-focused, and justice-oriented practices and wholeheartedly embody an indigenized and decolonized worldview. I believe that everyone carries unique gifts and the wisdom to move toward healing, growth, and change. I am not here to show up as an “expert”; I am here to walk alongside you as a partner, collaborator, or even co-conspirator, as you define your own experience. I honour each person’s unique rhythm and hold space for a therapeutic relationship guided by spirit and shared intention. Through the relationships I have built in my personal, nursing, and counselling experiences, I have had the privilege of bearing witness to such a wide range of open, raw, and vulnerable expressions. From survival tools to warmth and protective strategies, I believe that they are all valid and deserve space, compassion, and understanding. In gratitude and reciprocity for the extensions of trust and vulnerability; I bring my gifts, knowledge, and lived-experience to each encounter with deep respect and reverence for our shared connection. Customized Therapeutic Offerings: I offer virtual and outdoor therapy sessions tailored to each person with the following practices: •Nature-Based Therapy: Connecting with the land with movement and stillness to foster well-being and harmony with mother earth. •Body-Mind Healing: Facilitating a process of reconnecting with your body’s wisdom to promote emotional well-being. •Narratives & Storytelling: Rediscovering personal truths through storytelling, leading to healing and growth. •Inner Child Healing & Working with Different Parts of Yourself: Nurturing inner child parts and understanding how aspects of self influence your present. •Embracing Neurodiversity: Encouraging self-acceptance and self-advocacy by exploring your unique rhythms, sensory needs, and strengths. •Earth-Based and Ancestral-Spiritual Integration: Personalize your therapeutic experience with sacred and spiritual elements, including earth-based practices, channelling, and lineage healing. •Creative Expression: Weaving in creative expression, such as art, music, and movement to explore and move with emotion. Additional Areas of Focus: •Intersectional Care: I hold space for the social, cultural, and systemic factors that impact healing, particularly for underrepresented communities. I look at the whole person, knowing our identities and experiences are interconnected. •Hormone Readiness Assessments: I provide guidance and support for the completion of hormone-readiness assessments. I assist those I work with in navigating this journey while advocating for their rights and autonomy. •Abolition: I advocate for dismantling carceral and oppressive systems and dream of community-centred,transformative ways of caring for each other. I aim to create a space rooted in respect, collaboration, and empowerment that is guided by compassion and a commitment to equity. Life Beyond Therapy Outside of therapy, I enjoy spending time in the woods, in bodies of water, on mountains, in ceremony, and in the company of my cats, Russia and Sochi. I have ever-evolving hyperfixations; right now, I have been enjoying sewing, beading, reading, and hide-tanning. If you resonate with my approach please email me at janae@astamahstek.ca or book a consult at https://aws-portal.owlpractice.ca/janaedunlop/booking. ekosani (thank you) and kinanâskomitin (I am grateful to you).
